APTS
National Award
The
Association of America's Public Television Stations (APTS)
last month honored Channels 45/49 with two awards for
the stations' work in blazing the trail into the future
for public television.
Channels
45/49, a recognized leader in educational technologies
among public television stations nationwide, was granted
the APTS 21st Century Award for our Video on
Demand (VOD) project, which combines instructional
television and computers in the classroom. Today, seven
pilot schools in northeast Ohio are using this
revolutionary new service that allows students to
download and view educational video clips produced by
Ohio public television stations and made available via
the Internet. VOD also allows students and teachers to
work interactively with other schools.

In
a unique pilot project rolled out in September, students
and teachers have been connected to a Wide Area computer
network that not only allows the reception of high
quality Video On Demand, but also provides Internet
access, videoconferencing and collaborative computing.
Users need only a Web browser to select and play
the video clips stored on a central server in Kent,
Ohio. Participating schools also have the ability to
author, digitize and publish their own video clips and
Web materials, storing them locally on a Web server
donated to the schools and maintained by the TV station.
"It
is a pleasure to bring cutting edge computing to schools
in our broadcast service area", says Joe Perkins,
Systems Administrator.
"When we started the project, we were pretty
much universally told that video over T1 lines was
impossible. But
we have been able to demonstrate that new delivery
vehicles exist for our core product, and enthusiasm in
the schools is at an all time high."
